La Piscine: Behind the campaign

It’s been an unprecedented year, and whilst we haven’t been able to fulfil all of our European escapades over the last few months, we have been taking many a trip through our inspiration archives instead.

As with every campaign, we start by mood-boarding and sourcing inspiration. That’s everything from flicking through photography books like Poolside, Slim Aarons collection of glamorous images, to trawling through vintage magazine editorials on Pinterest or even taking inspiration from the Cote d’Azur scenes from Jaques Deray’s 1969 film La Piscine, we’ve been getting lost in summers past and indulging in a euro-summer nostalgia.

Our latest campaign, named in ode of Deray’s languid late summer flick, is influenced by these captivating summer scenes and has us hopeful of late summer adventures of our own. Below are some of our favourite influences behind this campaign story.

Romy Schneider and Alain Delon in La Piscine, 1969.

This slow-moving sensual, French 60’s thriller is both elegantly provocative and consistently suspenseful. Although there are darker twists to the plot, the hedonist romance and timelessly stunning St. Tropez setting has us dreaming of getaways in the French Riviera.

Images from Poolside, Slim Aarons, shot between the 50’s-80’s.

A cultural icon, Slim Aarons spent decades capturing the life of glamorous jet-setters in the most beautiful destinations. The pool however, is the main character of this book and throughout you’ll find it surrounded by bikinis, well-oiled skin and summer cocktails – an exclusive peek into decadent summer living. You’ll have seen plenty of his imagery featured on our inspiration posts and he remains one of our cultural faves.

Naomi Campbell, Beverly Peele and Tryra Banks photographed by Patrick Demarchelier for Vogue Magazine, 1992.

This editorial is one of our all time favourites. Three of the most iconic black supermodels on a yacht in this memorable Vogue editorial encapsulates the dreamiest summer holiday mood and the 90’s supermodel era we are so obsessed with. As a brand and inline with our commitments following the Black Lives Matter movement, we continue to recognise the immense contributions black artists have made towards fashion culture and continue to be so heavily influenced and inspired by them.
